What are moisture meters used for?+
Moisture meters detect moisture inside materials — wood, drywall, concrete, carpet. They're used in woodworking, flooring, construction, roofing, and inspection to catch moisture problems before they cause damage, and to confirm materials are dry before painting, sealing, or closing up a repair.
Do Sonin water alarms need WiFi or an app?+
No. Sonin alarms are self-contained: one 9V battery, a sensor, and a loud alarm. There is nothing to pair, no app to install, no account to create, and no subscription. That's deliberate — it means the alarm works in a basement, a boat, or an empty vacation home where connectivity doesn't reach.
Where should I put the sensor?+
Wherever water would appear first and lowest: the floor beside the water heater, the pan under the washer, the lowest point of the basement floor, inside the HVAC drain pan, under a sink, or in the sump pit. The sensor can sit up to 6 feet from the alarm (12 feet apart for the two-sensor 00802), so mount the alarm where you'll actually hear it.
How do I know the alarm still works?+
Press the circuit test button — it checks the whole system, sensor included. The alarm also chirps a low-battery signal when the 9V needs replacing. Test it when you change your smoke detector batteries.
How accurate are moisture meters?+
Pin-type meters like Sonin's read the moisture content between the probe contacts. They're designed to tell you reliably whether a material is dry, damp, or wet, and to compare readings across a surface to find where moisture is coming from. Take several readings across an area rather than trusting a single spot.
